Compost Math: How to Size Your Bin for Your Household

Most compost bin advice starts with what to buy. We think it should start with math. Before you spend money on a tumbler or drag pallets into the yard, you need to know roughly how much organic waste your kitchen produces, how quickly you want finished compost, and how much room you can spare.

Sizing correctly matters more than most guides admit. A bin that is too small never heats up, so scraps sit and rot. A bin that is too large stays dry in the middle, so the pile stalls.
