Glass feels like the easy case. It’s clear or coloured, it goes in the bottle bank, and that’s that. Compared with the maze of plastic codes and laminated cartons, glass should be straightforward. And it mostly is, until you try to recycle a broken Pyrex bowl, a wine glass, a window pane from a renovation, or a mirror that fell off the wall. Then you discover that “glass” is actually a family of very different materials, only some of which the recycling system can handle.
The reason is melting point. The glass in a wine bottle melts at around 1,400 degrees Celsius. The glass in a Pyrex dish, borosilicate glass, melts at around 1,650. The glass in a window contains additives that change its behaviour in a furnace. Mix them and you get a cracked, weakened product that can’t be safely reused. Colour sorting and why it matters
Some bottle banks have separate slots for clear, green, and brown glass. Others take all colours mixed. The reason for the split is colour-specific markets, clear glass can be remade into clear jars, brown into brown bottles, but mixing colours produces a greenish glass that’s harder to sell. If your local bank separates, please do too. If it doesn’t, mixed is fine.
Why blue glass goes with green
If you find a blue bottle, like one for premium gin or sparkling water, it usually goes in the green slot. Industry treats blue as a sub-type of green for sorting purposes. Specialty colours like red or amber decoration are rare and won’t skew a batch.
The lids and labels question
Metal lids on jars can stay or be removed, most modern facilities can separate them. Some councils prefer you remove and recycle separately, others want them on. Either way is fine. Labels can stay; they burn off in the furnace.
What you should do is rinse the jar lightly. Not sterilise, just remove the major residue. A jam jar left with crusted jam will attract wasps in summer and slows the sorting process.
Why broken glass is harder
Broken bottle pieces are still recyclable in principle, but only if they’re obviously from a bottle. Small unidentified fragments can be anything, a tumbler, a windowpane, a Pyrex shard. Sorting facilities default to assuming broken glass is mixed-source and reject it. This is one reason fragments at the kerb get binned even if they’re from a wine bottle.
For broken bottle glass at home, wrap it in newspaper, secure with tape, and put it in general waste rather than the recycling. If you have a large amount, say, from a kitchen accident, you can take it to the household waste centre and ask where to put it.
Mirrors and the magic of reuse
A whole intact mirror is one of the easiest items to find a second home for. Local Buy Nothing groups absorb them within hours. Frame shops sometimes buy them. After the bottle bank or kerbside collection, glass travels to a sorting depot where it’s crushed into cullet and screened for contamination, caps, labels, the occasional ceramic shard. The cleaned cullet is sold to a glass works, often in Yorkshire or the Midlands. The works mixes cullet with sand, soda ash, and limestone, heats the lot to around 1,500 degrees Celsius, and blows or moulds new bottles and jars. The whole cycle from bottle bank to shop shelf is typically six to eight weeks.
Glass really is one of the success stories. The infrastructure works, the markets are stable, and a properly recycled bottle can be back on a shelf within weeks. As long as you keep the bottle bank clear of its lookalike cousins, the system holds together neatly.

Can I put Pyrex in the bottle bank?
