The worms arrived in a hessian bag through the letterbox. The postman, who had never delivered worms before, knocked twice to check this was deliberate. I had ordered five hundred Eisenia fetida, paid sixteen pounds, and was now standing in my hallway holding what felt like a damp grapefruit. They were beautiful, in their way: small, red, the colour of brick dust, faintly striped, and quite startlingly lively when you tipped them out into the bin.

That was four years ago. The same worms, well, their descendants, and probably their descendants’ descendants, still live in a stacked tray system in the corner of my utility room. They produce roughly two litres of finished castings a month, eat almost everything I give them, and have never once given anyone in the house cause to mention them. Why worms in the first place

Composting worms (almost always Eisenia fetida, sometimes called red wigglers or tiger worms) are not the same as the earthworms you find in soil. USDA composting overview They live in decaying surface litter rather than in the ground, they breed quickly, they tolerate the disturbance of being added to, and they convert food scraps into castings, small dark pellets, at a rate that ordinary soil worms cannot match.

What they produce is, to a houseplant, magic. Worm castings are gentle (you cannot overdose plants the way you can with shop-bought fertiliser), full of beneficial microbes, and pleasant to handle. To a garden they are concentrated enough that a handful around a tomato plant in May is visibly different by July.

The other reason is simpler. A worm bin lets you keep food scraps out of the bin without leaving the flat. It does the work while you sleep.

What to buy, plainly

You have three reasonable options, in rising order of cost and falling order of fiddliness.

A DIY bin from two stacked plastic storage boxes, drilled with air holes, costs under ten pounds and works fine. The downside is harvesting, you need to dig out finished compost from underneath living worms, which is mostly a matter of patience but tests your enthusiasm in year two.

A stacked-tray commercial wormery (the kind that looks like four flat-pack trays balanced on legs, with a tap at the bottom) costs between eighty and a hundred and fifty pounds. The worms migrate upwards as you add fresh trays, leaving finished castings behind in the lower trays. You harvest by lifting off the bottom tray, which is an enormous quality-of-life upgrade.

A continuous-flow wormery (a single tall bin with a mesh floor and a handle to harvest from below) costs around two hundred pounds and is, for the work it saves, worth it if you intend to do this for years.

I started with stacked storage boxes. I now run a stacked-tray commercial unit. I would not recommend going further than that unless you are running a small-scale castings operation, which is a sentence I never imagined writing.

The first month: settling in

Worms arrive stressed. They have been in a bag for two days, they are cold, and they need a few weeks of calm to start breeding. The mistake almost everybody makes is to feed them heavily on day one. Don’t. Give them a thick bed of moistened shredded cardboard or torn newspaper, a small handful of food scraps, and leave the lid on for a week.

After a week, add another small handful. After two weeks, you can start adding scraps every two or three days. By the end of month one, the population will have started to expand, and the rate at which they process food increases visibly.

What worms eat (and what they don’t)

Worms thrive on a mixture of fresh fruit and vegetable scraps and damp, fibrous “brown” material like shredded card, paper or coir. Roughly half and half by volume is a good aim. Without brown material the bin turns wet and acidic; with too much brown it goes dry and the worms stall.

Good worm food:

  • Banana skins, apple cores, melon rinds, soft fruit gone past it.
  • Vegetable peelings, lettuce, cucumber ends, the soft outer leaves of cabbage.
  • Tea leaves loose from bags, used coffee grounds (in moderation), eggshells crushed fine.
  • Shredded cardboard, the brown of egg cartons, plain newspaper, tissue without dye.

Things worms do not like:

  • Citrus peel in any quantity, it is acidic and slow to break down.
  • Onion and garlic skins, same reason, in smaller amounts.
  • Meat, fish, dairy, cooked food. The worms will eat it eventually, but it ferments first, and your bin will smell.
  • Anything oily or salty.

The quiet rhythm

The thing about a working wormery is that almost nothing happens visibly. You lift the lid, you see fewer worms than you expect (they are mostly down in the bedding), the food from last week is roughly half gone, you add the new scraps, you close the lid. There is no churning, no bubbling, no smell. The drama is happening at the cellular level, and the only sign of it is the slow accumulation of dark, crumbly castings in the bottom tray.

Once a month or so you might want to glance at moisture (squeeze a handful of bedding, it should feel like a wrung-out sponge) and ventilation. Once every two or three months you harvest the bottom tray. That is the whole of it.

When something goes wrong

A wormery that is misbehaving usually tells you in one of three ways. Smell suggests too much food, too wet, or anaerobic conditions, stop feeding, add dry brown material, fluff the top inch with a fork. Flies suggest fresh scraps left exposed at the surface, bury new food under bedding. Worms trying to escape suggest the bin has gone too acidic, often after a citrus binge, add crushed eggshell, stop adding acidic food for a fortnight.

None of these are crises. A worm bin is forgiving. I have over-fed mine, forgotten it for three weeks while away, and once accidentally added a slice of mouldy bread that turned out to contain a worrying amount of orange juice. Each time the bin sorted itself out within a fortnight of me paying attention again.

Four years on, my worms are still small, still red, still entirely unbothered. The hallway worm-grapefruit moment is hard to imagine now. They live in the corner. They eat the peelings. They make the soil that grows the tomato plants on the kitchen window. Quiet work, quietly done.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many worms do I need to start?

Most starter packs are around 250 to 500 worms, which is plenty. They breed quickly if conditions are right, and the population self-regulates to match the food supply. There is no need to start with thousands.

Will the worms escape or die?

Worms only try to leave if the conditions are wrong — too wet, too acidic, or too hot. In a well-set-up bin they stay put. Most worm losses early on are from overfeeding, which causes anaerobic conditions; reduce food and the bin recovers.

How often do I feed them?

Every two to three days for a small bin, less often if you have just topped it up. The rule of thumb is to add new food only when the previous lot is at least half gone. Overfeeding causes nearly every wormery problem.

Can I leave the wormery while I go on holiday?

Up to three weeks, easily, if you do a deep feed and a top-up of bedding before you go. Worms slow down their eating to match availability. Four to six weeks is possible but pushes it.

What do I do with the finished castings?

Use them as a top dressing for houseplants (a thin layer on the soil), mix into seed-starting compost at about ten percent, or sprinkle around outdoor plants. They are gentle enough that you cannot really overdose.

Is a worm bin suitable for a kitchen?

A small one, yes. It needs to stay between about 15 and 25 degrees, which a kitchen usually provides. It will not smell if properly run. Many people keep them in utility cupboards, under-sink areas, or quiet corners of a kitchen.
